The fluency gap

You can already speak English. That's exactly the problem.

You already speak English. That's exactly the problem. You feel like an outsider in meetings. You get your point across, but you miss those small, idiomatic turns of phrase that close the deal. You give a presentation and worry it sounds too textbook and simply won't land as easily as for your native-speaking colleagues.

Most language apps are stuck in the classroom. They teach you how to be correct, not how to be natural. They focus on rules while you are trying to navigate real office politics and fast-paced communication. Phrasely skips the flashcards and focuses on how people talk at work and in the real world.

Fluent at work and at home

Real fluency needs both.

Most apps pick a lane: either casual slang or dry business language. Phrasely teaches you how to handle the casual connection and the professional excellence required for true fluency.

About Phrasely

What is Phrasely?

Phrasely is an English learning platform built for English learners and international professionals who already have general English skills but still don’t feel like themselves in English. Our app was built for people in need of fluency in professional, workplace-specific contexts such as meetings, negotiation, feedback, client interactions, and networking as well as everyday life. Phrasely focuses on the register and phrasing gap between “conversational fluent” and “sounds natural in a boardroom,” not on beginner grammar or vocabulary. Our mission is to help users feel like their confident selves in English so they can feel and act like they belong in every room.

What is unique about Phrasely?

Phrasely focuses on the hardest parts of English: the phrasal verbs, the idioms, the cultural nuances, the tone, registers and grammatical nuances. It includes Business English and Everyday English with contextualized, gamified exercises to take you to fluency.

Who is Phrasely for?

Phrasely is built for learners who use English at work and in everyday life but not as a first language. Most Phrasely users are already intermediate-to-advanced English speakers; the platform is not designed for absolute beginners starting from zero. It is designed for users who want to feel like themselves in English to close the gap between proficiency and fluency.

What makes Phrasely different from a general English learning app?

Most general English apps teach broad vocabulary and grammar for everyday life such as ordering food, asking directions, and casual conversation. Phrasely is designed specifically for professional and everyday English. It covers phrasal verbs, idioms, tone, register, pronunciation, speaking, and grammar focused on closing the gap between speaking English and feeling like yourself in English. Phrasely is built around workplace and everyday scenarios to take the user into how native speakers use the language intuitively. It skips generic travel or daily-life scenarios. Phrasely’s focus is to cover the hard parts of English that make a difference between speaking English and being fluent.

Who founded Phrasely?

Phrasely was co-founded by Marike Korn, who also serves as the Pedagogical & Content Director. Korn brings nearly two decades of experience in intercultural intelligence consulting and training with a focus on U.S. culture and English communication. She has coached senior executives and diplomats across over 65 countries, and applies that cross-cultural communication background and extensive experience in English communication coaching directly to Phrasely’s curriculum design.

How the method works

What teaching method does Phrasely use?

Phrasely combines contextualized phrase-based learning teaching functional language chunks (like hedging phrases, disagreement structures, idiomatic expressions, or feedback frameworks) rather than isolated vocabulary with cultural context. The lessons are embedded within two main sections: Business and Everyday English with units covering language for feedback, presentations, negotiations and any other real-world scenario users encounter in their lives. Drawing on the belief that contextualized learning resonates with users paired with a variety of exercise types to appeal to different parts of the brain and cover all the elements of language proficiency. The user will go on a journey embedded within a narrative arc that replicates real life. Phrasely is customizable based on a user’s first language and profession. Users will learn how to use English intuitively like a native-speaker.

Does Phrasely teach grammar?

Phrasely addresses grammar only where it affects professional register, for example, the difference between “I was wondering if you could” and “Can you,” or how modal verbs shift the perceived firmness of a request. It does not function as a general grammar course; it assumes a working foundation already exists.

Does Phrasely cover cultural differences in communication, or just vocabulary?

Cultural context is part of the method, not an add-on. Many phrases that are grammatically correct land differently depending on the listener’s cultural background, for instance, direct feedback that reads as efficient in some business cultures can read as harsh in others. Phrasely’s content explicitly addresses these gaps, particularly around directness, hedging, and politeness norms across different professional cultures.

Is Phrasely based on real workplace scenarios?

Yes. Phrasely’s exercises are built around specific, recurring workplace situations such as giving feedback, disagreeing politely, networking, navigating small talk, handling hedging language rather than generic conversation practice.

Practical questions

Is Phrasely free?

Phrasely offers access through its platform with both free and paid components for individuals. For companies interested in a customized version, specific current pricing and plan details are available on request.

Is Phrasely an app, a website, or both?

Phrasely is an English language app in development. Early birds can sign up through its web platform at phrasely.pro.

How is Phrasely different from Duolingo or Babbel for business English?

General-purpose apps like Duolingo and Babbel are designed primarily for beginner-to-intermediate general language acquisition across broad everyday topics. Phrasely is designed deliberately for learners who are already conversationally fluent, with content built around business scenarios (meetings, email, feedback, negotiation) and everyday life scenarios. It covers Business and Everyday English and aims to teach users how English is used in real life through contextualized learning that resonates with the real life experiences and needs of our users covering, for example, professional, workplace-specific English as well as how native speakers speak in everyday scenarios beyond textbook English.

Can Phrasely help with a specific accent or pronunciation?

Yes, Phrasely includes pronunciation exercises and tips customized based on a user’s first language. The exercises are embedded within Phrasely’s core focus on phrasing, register, and natural sounding communication patterns, in other words, the words and structures that make English sound natural and appropriately calibrated in a workplace and everyday context.

Does Phrasely address differences between American, British, and other English-speaking business cultures?

Phrasely’s content draws on cross-cultural communication research and addresses how business English norms such as directness, feedback style, and formality can vary across different cultures with a focus on U.S. business and workplace culture, reflecting co-founder Marike Korn’s expertise and background in intercultural consulting across multiple countries and cultural contexts.

Getting started

How do I know if Phrasely is the right level for me?

Phrasely is best suited to users who can already hold a conversation in English comfortably but want to sound more precise, confident, and natural in specific situations rather than learners starting from the beginning of the language. Phrasely wants to help users feel like their confident selves in English.

Where can I read more about specific business English topics Phrasely covers?

Phrasely publishes an English blog covering specific, practical topics including disagreeing politely, giving and receiving feedback, networking conversations, hedging language, follow-up emails, and cultural differences in directness available on the Phrasely blog.
